And is it a truthful claim to say that all Americans have equal opportunity? If a Black person, a White person, a Middle-Eastern person, and a Mexican person somehow all put in an equal amount of â€Å"hard work†, is it intellectually honest to say they will all yield the same benefits? Already there is a formidable margin that begins to form. When Duke is at the Circus-Circus sitting at the bar, negotiating buying a monkey (â€Å"GoddammitI want that ape†), he claims to be sitting in the heart of the American Dream: He seemed surprised. â€Å"You found the American Dream?† he said. â€Å"In this town?† I nodded. â€Å"We’re sitting on the main nerve right now,† I said. (Thompson 190, 191) He then goes on to relate the story of the manager who, as a kid, wanted to run away to the circus. And now he had his own circus. Bruce, the person he is talking to at the bar, says, â€Å"Now the bastard hasa license to steal, tooYou’re right—he’s the model.† (Thompson 191). What is absolutely crucial to Thompson’s view of the American Dream is the fact that he places the â€Å"nerve† of it in not only in Las Vegas, which is portrayed as a nonsensical, crazy town, but in the Circus-Circus no less, the epicentre for the absurd and harebrained. This could be interpreted through a couple different lenses. One interpretation is that the idea of â€Å"success† in the American Dream is so personal, so random, so subjective that these ideas could be so medley as to be comparable to the chaos that is the Circus-Circus. However, from what is known of Hunter S. Thompson and his eccentricities and views on government/big-business America, a more likely interpretation is that the very idea of an â€Å"American Dream†, with all its ambiguities, false promises, and romanticism, is such a completely absurd and ridiculous idea that it is not only as ludicrous as a circus, but is comparable to the Circus-Circus while having been on a motley of hallucinogens. Along with that, the agreed upon â€Å"model† for the American Dream is, as claimed by Duke, someone who wants to join a circus, receives his own, and then is able to steal. The end line here is that the Circus-Circus manager’s success is defined by his being able to steal. This is hugely satirical towards the American Dream, Americans themselves, and it even extends to capitalism. Thompson, in the above passage, depicts the American Dream to be goofy, nonsensical, and selfish. With such being the epitome of the American Dream and everything it stands for, Thompson sends a significant attack on America and its ideals, prompting perhaps a re-evaluation of such. Another of Thompson’s comparisons is seen when Duke and Dr. Gonzo are inquiring about the American Dream, and a waitress and a man named Lou take it as a physical place. Thompson plays with words here by having the waitress recall the physical place’s location on a street called â€Å"Paradise†. This, of course, deals with the idea that the American Dream will yield some modern sort of capitalist â€Å"paradise† or some accessible paradisiacal form of success. Also important to this idea is that the waitress and Lou both cannot exactly pinpoint this supposed place’s location. What Thompson shows here is that the American Dream cannot be found because it does not exist. It is the chase towards success that people can never escape, and the American Dream is ultimately unattainable. Continuing on this tangent, Lou later asks, â€Å"did somebody just send you on a goose chase?† (Thompson, 165). Again, this further concretes Thompson’s mess age that the American Dream is a nonsensical and unreachable ideal. Success is so subjective, America can oftentimes be criminally judgemental and unequal, and it is essentially just an insane idea to even consider. After an entire chapter devoted towards trying to ascertain the American Dream’s location (the supposed physical place), Duke and Dr. Gonzo eventually reach what used to be a psychiatrist’s club that is described as such: â€Å"a huge slab of cracked, scorched concrete in a vacant lot full of tall weeds. The owner of a gas station across the road said the place had ‘burned down about three years ago.’† (Thompson 168). This is the icing on Thompson’s metaphorical cake: a psychiatrist’s purpose is to diagnose and treat mental illness. The comparisons are clear. Chasing the American Dream is akin to a sort of mental illness, a delusion; Thompson might even extend that comparison perhaps to a drug-induced weekend of hallucinati ons and absurdity. Not only that, but the place itself, the American Dream, had burned down. Thompson implies here that if there ever was an American Dream, in the abstract sense, that it is long gone, it is completely desecrated, and it has been in such a state for so long that a lot â€Å"full of tall weeds† had been able to flourish. On a larger scale, the reader may look at the trip in general in a metaphorical, while not too abstract, light in which it relates to the American Dream. Duke, and the 1960s counterculture, attempted to deny this and to consequently create their own, independent version of the American Dream. Going further down the line of this metaphor, the reader may also look to how the trip ultimately turned out fo r Duke: with an intense hangover and no sign of having found this American Dream which he had originally set out for. The same can apply in a sense to the entirety of the 1960s counterculture. While the movement gradually ended and emerged with a societal â€Å"hangover†, they were left without having â€Å"found† the â€Å"American Dream†. That is not to say that there were no reformations, perhaps even in the idea of the American Dream itself. To many of the participants in the counterculture, they were, whether it was through drug-induced hallucinations or not, able to ascertain that there is no real grasp of a universal American Dream. Their misadventures led them to the fact that it is in fact chimerical. The reader may see this view reflected in Thompson’s writing in that the â€Å"main nerve† of the American Dream was found in a circus. One may look at the novel from the viewpoint that â€Å" Hunter S. The Sunni and Shia conflict is currently the longest running feud in the world. Both groups possess an extreme hatred for one another. Over the years, these two groups have openly expressed their hatred with one another through violent killings. This split between the Shia and Sunni originates all the way back in the 7th century. Their difference was based on political differences. As a part of my essay I will explain the difference and origins of the split between the Shi’a and Sunni and also cover the current issues between them. I have always assumed that the Sunni and Shia conflict is similar to the war between the Catholic and Protestant, however it is much more complex and different. These two branches of Islam share the same Holy Book and all agree that Allah is there God. Sunni and Shia both believe that the last prophet was Muhammad. However, when Muhammad died, there was a disagreement of who would be Muhammad’s successor. There were two candidates to be the successor of Muhammad, Abu Bakr and Ali bin Abi Talib. Ali bin Abi Talib was Muhammad’s cousin and son-in law. Abu Bakr was Muhammad’s friend and senior companion. The Sunni Muslims believed that the leadership should be granted to the person with most experience. On the other hand, the Shi’a believed the decision should be based purely through Muhammad’s bloodline. The majority of Muslim ended up choosing Abu Bakr to be the Caliph (successor). However, Abu Bakr’s rule was shortlived when he died in 634 C E.

Therefore, it can be said that holidays are necessary for every individual to as it brings about greater refreshed energy. However while selecting any holiday destination, individuals would need to make note of certain aspects. . Holiday planning and selection of destination is mainly dependent on the two factors. They are budget and time. In the recent scenario, tourism industry has become an emerging industry which provides a lot of fun and enjoyment (Gssling et al., 2012). The industry mainly depends on the choice, taste and the culture of the tourists. Selection of tourist destination varies from person to person. Vacations can be relaxing or adventurous a nd this solely depends on the age and the mentality of the individuals. Travelling companion or partners are also an important criterion in selecting and enjoying a holiday destination. In this assignment, five surveys were done out of which three have been selected. The responses of the attendants were thoroughly justified in coming to the conclusion. According to the response, demographic factors and personality are responsible for selecting a holiday tour. Literature review The personality of a person is an important factor in choosing a holiday destination. According to Alamanos, et al., (2014) individuals who are adventure friendly choose holiday destinations where they can enjoy scuba diving, gliding, hill climbing, or any other adventurous activities. On the other hand, Ashworth and Goodall (2012) opine that people, who enjoy relaxation, choose places where they can relax with their friends, colleagues or families. Shopping destinations are thronged by individuals who enjoy shopping Therefore, it can be understood that individuals who like adventure, choose destinations which gives them an adrenaline rush. Moreover, companions are also important in selecting a holiday destination (Cohen, et al., 2014). Selection of holiday destination also changes when individuals decide to go on holiday either with their friends, families or colleagues. Rich people with high profile choose exotic locations whereas couples mainly prefer locations which are very clos e to nature and have calmness around the location. Travelers choose holiday locations where they can enjoy themselves to the fullest. Demographics is also another factor which helps an individual in selecting their holiday places. Age is the most important criteria in selecting a holiday destination. According to Fontes, et al., (2015), teenagers and young people like places where they can have adventure as well entertainment. They are always eager at exploring new places. They always choose places which offer such adventure and entertainment and they include places like Tristan da Cunha in the United Kingdom, Mawsynram in India, Barcelona Cones and much more (Gssling et al., 2012). People in the age group of the late twenties and early thirties like to visit adventurous places. On the other hand, according to Gabriel and Lang, (2015), others prefer calm places as their holiday destination. The budget is also another important factor. Teenagers do not have enough money while working class individuals are more financially stable when it comes to holidaying. Ethnicity is also another important factor while selecting holiday destinations. Survey results In this assignment, five people were surveyed among which three have been selected. In our selection, we have selected two female and one male respondent. All of them are highly educated and are working professionals. It was observed that these individuals rated holiday destinations based on certain factors. Moreover, the three respondents have varied income level and different demographic quality. Analysis The response of the respondents was thoroughly analyzed by the researcher, and various marking criteria have been selected. On the basis of the response, it has been found that personality and demographic factor are the important issues. Personality From the survey of the three different persons, it can be understood that time duration is an important criterion in selecting a holiday spot according to respondent 2. While Respondent 3 give more importance to cost, whereas respondent 5 gives importance to activities. According to Respondent 2 accommodation and transportation occupies the least importance position. Therefore, it can be said that companions and partners of the "respondent 2" like adventurous places and they are less concerned about transportation and accommodation. She also chooses activities as the second most important factor while selecting a holiday destination. Thus, affirming once again that she is an adventure loving person. She is also highly educated and a Ph.D. holder. This shows that she is an educated person. Moreover price and food is also least important to her. Her best holiday destination is Barossa Valley in Australia because she is an adventure loving individual (Gssling et al., 2012). All the disc ussions about her show that in visiting Australia, she will be profitable in all aspects. "Respondent 3" gives most importance to cost while selecting a holiday tour. Therefore, it can be said that he give importance to value for money while selecting a holiday destination. He always wants to evaluate the value of service in terms of the money he contributes. It can also be said that since his income level is also not much high, he may not be able to spend heavily on holidays. The second most important rating according to him is activities. Therefore, he too likes adventure. The other remaining criteria are of least importance to him, and it can be said that that money is the important factor for him while selecting a holiday destination. He is also highly qualified and has the highest degree of bachelor education. He prefers Hong Kong as the desired location for vacationing with families and friends. Like "Respondent 2" food and accommodation are also of least importance to him. According to him, food and accommodation services available in Hong Kong are not of very high and are unable to fulfill his expectations. The food and accommodation quality of Hong Kong is also rated worst as compared to other countries (Phau, et al., 2014).. According to him, Hong Kong is a place where the expense is moderate and middle-class families can afford to spend holidays in Hong Kong. Therefore, it can be said that Hong Kong is the best place for him to spend leisure times. Respondent 5 chooses activities as the most important criterion in selecting a holiday destination. She likes to visit New Zealand as his preferred destination. She is a fun loving and adventurous person. She has also given importance to the cost while selecting her desired destination to spend her leisure times. Duration and transportation are of least importance to her (Jacobsen, et al., 2012). She had rated New Zealand as a moderate place for in terms of cost, duration, and accommodation for spending times on activities. So it can be said that New Zealand has matched his preference and personality. Demographic Demographic quality is an important factor in selecting holiday destinations. The respondents who were selected are highly educated individuals who are aged above forty. Respondent 2 and Respondent 3 were married while respondent 5 was divorced. It has been found that "Respondent 5" is a citizen of New Zealand and she likes exploring different parts of New Zealand. This also means that she is not comfortable in visiting places outside New Zealand. She is a manager of a company in New Zealand, and her age is above 59 years. It may also be assumed that she does not have enough money for visiting places outside New Zealand. She is also highly moody and needs affiliation. She is an independent woman and has enough power. She also has an extroverted character and is always open to new experiences. These factors play an important role in selecting the holiday destinations (Nicolau Mas, 2015). Respondent 2 is interested in exploring Barossa Valley and her demographic character suggests that she is open to new experiences. She has also got a unique character which can be easily differentiated from others. She has a fascination for tours. She had a family, and her age is near about 43 years. Her companion is her husband, and this is an added advantage for her in business trips. Her demographic qualities also show that she is an adventurous person and would like to travel with her husband. Respondent 3 prefers Hong Kong as his tourist destination. He is a 51 year old man with wife and children. He has always been open to new experiences. He thinks Hong Kong to be dream place to enjoy his leisure times. He loves to travel with his family and has a fascination for Hong Kong. This shows that Hong Kong is the dream place for him. Recommendations Based on the analysis of the respondents regarding the influence of demographic factors on consumer behavior the following recommendations have been suggested. Proper analysis of companion and partners. Prior knowledge about the holiday destination. Thorough analysis of tourist preference and their needs. Identification of the season which draws greater travel and vacationing. Gathering knowledge about the culture of the people. Conclusion The researcher has thoroughly identified the personal traits among the individuals in selecting their holiday destination. The demographic condition also helps to find out the taste of the people. Apart from time and budget, there are several other factors responsible for selecting a holiday destination. The three respondents also have different views in selecting their holiday destination. Companions, partners, income, and age also influence their preference of selecting a holiday destination. Ernest Hemingway is one of the writers that define American Literature. Although he accomplished much in reputation and status due to his novel, his most celebrated works have always been his short stories. His short stories, which are known for their simple language and artful prose, are often seen as a reflection of his life. It can indeed be seen through several of the plots he penned that he was drawing out his own life experiences such as his portrayal of himself as a macho man, his relationship with the women in his life, war and death and of course alcohol. Noting this Martin Scofield rightly states, â€Å"the personal experience on which he frequently drew directly in his writing was full of confusing tension and conflict – between masculine and feminine elements in his personality, between admiration for the physical courage and a growing disillusion with violence, and between the optimism of youth and physical energy, and the inevitable depredation of old age and death. In his short stories we see vividly developed snapshots of turmoil, precise delineations of individual fragments of disparate experience.† (Scofield 139). The kind of heroes that the author went to write about in his book were a direct reflection of the kind of man he wanted to be. The male protagonist has an aura of dignity and an unwavering integrity about them. Compromise is not known to these characters in most instances. In fact both male and female characters that were created by Hemingway are more often than not, defiant of the society that they exist in and continually go against the societal norms and expectations. Hemingway was by nature a macho man. His life has shown us his indulgences in great adventures. The time he spent in wars, hunting and sport is reflected in several of his works. The kind of heroes Hemingway wrote about will probably not suffice today; torn soldiers, and death defying hunters, adventurers and bullfighters made up his works, but that these characters exhibited a personal code of honesty and decency. Harvey Claflin Mansfield rightly categorized the author’s personality in his book ‘Maniliness’, â€Å"Hemingway was a macho fellow and a seeker of adventure when coupled with fun†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Mansfield 52). An example of this can be taken from his short story ‘Indian Camp,’ where the physician is neither concerned with his lack of anesthetic and equipment nor the screaming patient. In true alpha male mode, he goes onto deliver a child with a jack-knife.   His complete lack of interest in the women’s pain, which normally affects people, and the way he goes onto admire his work as though it was a non-living thing gives off a very sadistic and stereotypical macho essence. At the same time we can compare the physician’s character to the American Indian man who slit his throat and died during his wife’s giving birth. That man did not have the courage and strength to face the ordeal that his wife was going through, unlike the physician who seemed to think nothing of it. And like that Hemingway continuously writes about men that could stand up to things and endure things. The strength which he at times referred to ‘grace under pressure’ was reflective of the kind of man that does not succumb to his problems. His story of the bull fighter can also be seen as an example of this very thing, where the protagonist ignores injuries to enter battle. Explaining the development of the characters through the developments in Hemingway’s life, John Campbell noted, â€Å"In the 1920s, Hemingway began to develop a public role for himself in an attempt to show people how a writer acts when not writing. He became comfortable with this role and wrote essays for Esquire Magazine that reflected a person, outdoorsman image of a very physical man; he made a safari to Africa in the 1930s, killed big game, and so on. His male characters began to resemble this image and became more â€Å"Active† in the 1930s and 1940s. Readers often associate this macho image with Hemingway, but it is difficult to generalize about men in his work, since the early male characters are vulnerable and the later ones – more independent – have a sense of â€Å"toughness† strength and masculinity.†Ã‚   (Campbell 251) Hemingway wrote extensively throughout his career. One of the main recurring themes that can be seen in his short stories is that of war and death. He participated in the First World War as an ambulance driver under the Red Cross. It was during his term in Italy that he had his first love affair and was also injured. As a part of the Italian infantry he was awarded two decorations by the Italian government as well. It was his time here that he witnessed first hand the ruthlessness and stoic attitude of soldiers around him. Much of his observations later became part of his works. His time as a war correspondent in span also influenced his work. The events of the civil war that took place in Spain greatly affected him. â€Å"The Spanish civil war stories have two characteristics in common. The first-person narrator in all of them is obviously Hemingway himself, correspond dent, film-maker, raconteur, and famous personage. The second characteristic is that the real subject of all these stories, as well as the play, is the political nature of the conflict. Philips Rawlings, the main character in the ‘Fifth Column’ is also substantially autobiographical and the ‘girl,’ Dorothy Bridges, is clearly based on Martha Gellhorn, as is the girl in the story ‘Landscapes with Figures† (Donaldson 236). The stories are his version of events and how he saw the war. Most of the material is based on first hand information and as he experienced it. His short stories poignantly portrayed soldiers that left behind and lived with legacies of combat. In ‘Soldier’s Home,’ Krebs is the disillusioned veteran that comes back to home to find himself without a spiritual home. He is out of place, alienated from his family, religion and society. Hemingway’s examination of the war torn characters can also bee seen through Nick Adams. Some critiques have linked the short stories to a potential autobiographical connection and their thematic treatment to the various stages the characters go through i.e. Nick’s stages of recovery from his physical and psychological war wounds which mirror the one’s Hemingway suffered himself. It is Hemingway who in the third-person story supports the fundamental idea of Nick’s physical and spiritual recovery and renewal. It can be taken in view that writing was a form of catharsis for the author and through writing about his ordeal he managed to work through his anxiety of war (to an extent). We can see through the stories, glimpses of Hemingway’s own pain and anguish. When he returned from war ridden areas he was deeply affected. The effects of his experiences were heavy influences on his work and gave them a new sense of life. Hemingway had extremely turbulent relationships with the women in his life. His love stories are ruled by conflict between men and women whose lives are always stuck in some momentum of great tension and problems, or an extremely vivid change. He was married to four different women and was infamous for his multiple affairs. If one was to look at Hemingway’s life, one would notice that he lacked the will to stick to one woman. At some point and time breaking things off and moving on stopped giving him the guilt it once did and women became just a habit for him. His relationships with women affected his work a great deal; Paul Reuban went onto prove this in his work when he wrote that, â€Å"His [Hemingway’s] writing also reflected his trouble with relating to women and his tendency to treat them as objects, as he had four marriages and countless affairs, highlighting his theme of alienation and disconnection [in his work].† It was his guilt over women that led him to the bottle and subsequently drenched him in depression. He could not move past his guilt quickly enough before he moved onto the next woman. In his entire life he repeatedly cheated on all the women he was   with; it was a vicious cycle of finding love, breaking love by finding someone else, getting depressed over his actions, finding someone else to get out of the depression. An example of the effect that his love life had on his work can be seen in ‘Hills like White Elephants,’ which was written after Hemingway had cheated on his wife Hadley with her own friend Pauline Pfeiffer. When Hemingway asked for a divorce, Hadley placed a condition of a separation between him and Pfeiffer for a certain period of time; if he remained in love even after that time he was to be granted the divorce. It was during this period that he wrote the story. The biggest similarity between his life and the short story is that in either a family member or loved one was being separated. The story which centers on a conversation between a man and a woman show that the man is the authority. The poor communication skills between the two also reflect that their relationship might end. Perhaps Hemingway himself saw this as Hadley and himself which poor communication was ending up in the death of something that connected them, in the case of the characters this would be the unborn child. When in Italy, Hemingway had a love affair while he was wounded in this duration. The effects of this can be seen in his works as well. In ‘A very short story,’ the injured solider who is found on the Italian front has a love affair with a nurse who tended to him. Just like Hemingway himself who fell in love with Agnes Von Kurowsky. As the story goes, the nurse later leaves the solider for an Italian officer. â€Å"‘A very short story’ ranks as one of Hemingway’s least effective stories. Behind a pretense of objectivity, it excoriates the faithless Agnes. Even four years after the jilting, he was too close to his subject matter to achieve the requisite artistic distance†¦ twice again he explored the subject of love between a wounded soldier and his nurse†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Beegal 105). Throughout his work it will be seen that he advocates the kind of courage in the world where men must survive without women, which goes against the work itself because it is based largely on this mother, sisters, wives, lovers etc. Hemingway’s works paved way for an entirely new genre of writing. He used plain simple language to give voice to his stories. Much of his work, when it comes to short stories, is greatly influenced by his life and it can be seen through the various example given herewith, how his life was a muse to him. His relationships with women and subsequently alcohol, his experiences at war and the death that he saw, and his ideas on masculinity and manhood were some of the basic ideas that he infused with his writings to form the basis of many of his stories. Hemingway may have been gifted but he very conflicts that he tried to work out through his writings, and the very tensions that he wrote about, subsequently became the reason he took his own life.
